Recorded on May 29, 1983
Throughout the 1980s, Ibrahim's recordings were remarkably consistent. A listener can hardly go wrong with any of them. Even so, from this listener's perspective, Zimbabwe is an album that stands out as special. It strikes me as a recording that captures Ibrahim at the height of his powers. The music is filled with a spirit of joyousness and gentleness -- and it's remarkably distinctive. This life-affirming music couldn't have been made by anyone else.
Over the years, I've discovered that I'm especially drawn to Ibrahim's trio and quartet recordings. Along with superlative rhythmic support from Essiet and Mumford, this outing features outstanding alto sax and flute work from frequent collaborator Carlos Ward.
Interesting. An 1980s Abdullah Ibrahim record I don't know, despite being raised on the stuff.
