Lee Konitz & Martial Solal - Duo: Live at the Berlin Jazz Days 1980 (MPS/PAUSA, 1982)

This post is by Scott

Lee Konitz (as); Martial Solal (p)

Recorded on October 30, 1980

In 1967, Lee Konitz recorded an album for Milestone that many regard as one of his finest, The Lee Konitz Duets.  Subsequently, Konitz continued to demonstrate his affinity for recording in a duo setting.  Not suprisingly, he primarily focused on pianists as duo partners, since the instrument is so flexible and pairs so well with other instrumentalists (and singers).

In fact, I did a bit of research and discovered that, over the span of his career, Konitz released at least 37 albums featuring the saxophone-piano duo format!  I've listed them below, preceded by the years in which they were recorded.

Of course, I haven't heard all these records.  But I have heard many of them, and Martial Solal's encounters with Konitz are always something special.  Every one is worth hearing, but my favorite is their collaboration from the 1980 Berliner Jazztage.  Edel now owns MPS Records, and they've actually reissued this album recently on vinyl.
