John Abercrombie Quartet - M (ECM, 1981)

This post is by Scott

John Abercrombie (g); Richie Beirach (p); George Mraz (b); Peter Donald (d)

Recorded in November 1980

In the late 1970s, guitarist John Abercrombie formed his first quartet with pianist Richie Beirach, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Peter Donald.  Even though they made outrageously good music, the group was largely overlooked; they broke up after releasing only three albums.

M (1981) was their final release.  Along with the band's other two LPs, M languished out of print for more than three decades -- until ECM finally reissued it in a 3-CD set, The First Quartet (ECM, 2015).

I've loved M from the first time that I heard it, so it has always astounded me that this album and this band have been so ignored.  If you've never heard it before, give it a listen.  See if you agree with me!
