As my previous post for Deep Down demonstrates, I hold Enrico Pieranunzi in the highest regard and especially recommend his trio albums. No Man's Land substitutes Steve Houghton for Joey Baron in the regular trio. Jazz critics might be tempted to label Houghton as a "journeyman" drummer due to his low profile as a leader. But he has had an active career and, judged by his playing on No Man's Land, certainly deserves wider recognition. His solo on "Blues in C" is a highlight on a Pieranunzi original that doesn't sound much like a conventional blues.
The leader and bassist Marc Johnson need no introduction. Their work together is a study in rapt communication and coordination based on a shared concept of each piece. Pieranunzi's originals are always engaging, and his approach to standards on this album evoke the influence of Bill Evans. In particular, "The Man I Love" is exquisite.
Highly recommended!
