Chico Freeman's Destiny Dance (Contemporary, 1981) has long been highly-regarded. The Penguin Guide to Jazz authors, Richard Cook and Brian Morton, rated it as a "core collection" disc, music every jazz fan should hear. It also features one of my musical heroes, Bobby Hutcherson. I've enjoyed the record for years; it's terrific.
So why have I chosen Peaceful Heart, Gentle Spirit? I think it's even better. The band is ridiculous. The compositions, all by Chico, are memorable. The audio quality is top-shelf. (Just listen to those gorgeous tones, that delicious swing from bassist Buster Williams!)
To the best of my knowledge, this LP has never been reissued in any digital format. It's odd. I would have expected the LP to receive the OJC treatment. But you should disregard their oversight and track down the vinyl, because the music is wonderful.
I agree with Scott's opinion of this fine record. There is an inherent danger in comparing records that are near the top of the heap. Peaceful Heart is more adventurous than Destiny's Dance, and I love the contrasts across the titles. Both are great choices. See my February post on Destiny!
ReplyDeleteI recently saw a copy for $3 in the used bin of a favorite record store. Yes, there are plenty of gems out there for the picking!
